Using the Toolbar

The toolbar allows you to interact with the map by clicking on the map with a tool. For example, if you click in the toolbar on the Zoom In tool, then click on the map, the map will zoom in around where you click.

You can also interact with the map using the keyboard. Also see Using the mouse for tips on using the mouse to interact with the map.

To use a tool

Note: Some tools do an action immediately. These include the Full-extent, Back-extent, Next-extent, and Magnifier tools.

Tools

Tools in your website depend on the purpose and use of the application. Some or all of these may be available:

Name Icon Description
Zoom in Zoom in tool Click and drag a rectangle: Click and hold the left mouse button down on the map at one corner of the rectangle to zoom in to. Drag the mouse to the other corner of the rectangle, and release the mouse button. The map will zoom in to the area of the rectangle.
Zoom out Zoom out tool Click and drag a rectangle: the map will zoom out so that the current map area will fit into the rectangle drawn. The smaller the rectangle you draw, the more the map will zoom out.
Pan (recenter) Pan tool Click and drag the map: Click and hold the left mouse button on the map, and drag the map. The map will be recentered, with the location dragged at the location you dropped it.
Full extent Full map extent Full extent: Immediately zooms the map out to the area of all features and layers. The active tool does not change.
Previous extent Zoom to previous extent Previous extent: The map returns to the area displayed previously. Similar to the browser's Back button, but specifically for the map. Up to ten previous extents are stored when the map is zoomed or panned. If the button is disabled, you are at the original extent in the extent history.
Forward extent Zoom to next extent Forward extent: The map displays the next extent in the list of stored map extents. This is only available after the Previous Extent button has been clicked. Up to ten extents are stored in the extent history. If the button is disabled, you are at the latest extent in the extent history.
Magnifier Magnifier tool Magnify a section of the map: See Magnifier for usage.
Identify Identify tool Click to identify: Click with the left mouse button on the map. A small icon is added to the map identify icon and a callout box displays the name of a feature at the location. See Identify features on the map for how to use the identification information.
Select by Point Select by Point Select using a mouse click: Click with the left mouse button on the map. All features in the active layer (the layer colored yellow in the Layer tab) under the point will be selected. Their attribute data will be added to the Results tab for display.
Select by Line Select by Line Select by drawing a line: Click with the left mouse button on the map. Move the mouse somewhere and click to draw a line between the 2 points. continue to do this until youhave enough points, then double-click the left mouse button to complete the line. All features in the active layer (the layer colored yellow in the Layer tab) under the line will be selected. Their attribute data will be added to the Results tab for display.
Select by Rectangle Select by Rectangle Select by drawing a rectangle: Click with the left mouse button on the map. Hold down the mouse-button while moving the mouse to draw a rectangle on screen, then release the button when the rectangle is the desired size. All features in the active layer (the layer colored yellow in the Layer tab) within the rectangle will be selected. Their attribute data will be added to the Results tab for display.
Select by Polygon Select by Rectangle Select by drawing a polygon: Click with the left mouse button on the map. Move the mouse and click again to draw a second point. Add as many points as you wish and double-click at the end to close the polygon. All features in the active layer (the layer colored yellow in the Layer tab) within the polygon will be selected. Their attribute data will be added to the Results tab for display.
Measure Measure tool Measure distance or area: See Measuring for usage.
Overview map Toggle overview map Toggle overview map on/off: Turns the overview map on or off. The overview map displays the main map's extent as a red rectangle within a map that covers a larger extent. For more details, see the Overview Map page.
Place HSE Com Point Measure tool Place a Communication Point: Click the map in the desired location using the HSE Com tool to place a communication point. Be sure to have the map zoomed close in to the location desired before placing the point to ensure better accuracy. The HSE Com entry page will appear for you to enter data about the new point.
